Asphalt roofing shingles make up about two-thirds of the roofing used in the U.S. today. Annually, roof installation generates an estimated 10-12 million tons of  tear-off  shingle scrap across the U.S. In Oklahoma alone, it is estimated that there is around 350 thousand tons annually depending on the amount of storms each year. Dumping these shingles into landfills when it contains valuable material is a serious environmental issue.  Asphalt shingles have outstanding recyclability because they are plentiful, and they are easy to separate from other types of waste.  Scrap shingles when ground up can be used in hot mix asphalt (HMA) to replace the use of virgin asphalt saving pavement companies thousands in costs.
